I don’t know what’s cuter: When celebrities let their children do their makeup, or when they let their partners do it. Either way, as long as the partner in question isn’t a makeup user themselves, it often turn out the same. And listen, I’m not saying that Benny Blanco possesses the artistry of a toddler—clearly, he excels in creative arenas like music—but when it comes to cosmetics, he really should leave it to fiancée Selena Gomez. And yet! She invited him to do her makeup—with an audience of millions.
Gomez posted a clip to both Instagram and TikTok that might break the record for most instances of nervous side-eye in a single video. Wearing a gray V-neck sweatshirt and hair clips to keep her wavy lob off of her face, the award-winning actor and beauty-brand founder starts off by saying, “Today, I’m going to let my fiancé do my makeup using Rare Beauty.”
It seems Gomez may already have some foundation and brow product on—probably a wise move to do those on her own—but she immediately finds herself answering questions about what each product Blanco picks up is and does. And, right after Gomez identifies a pressed powder for Blanco, as if to symbolize the minor catastrophe that will be the results of this glam session, her phone tumbles to the ground. (I love some good foreshadowing.)
After initially attempting to apply the pressed powder with his finger, Gomez encourages him to use a brush, and she praises him as he more or less doesn’t do any harm. But you can see the fear in Gomez’s eyes as he moves on to a liquid contouring product. “So, like, what am I contouring?” he asks while giggling, but Gomez has stopped giving hints.
Blanco applies bold, brown lines where blush would normally go, and when he attempts to blend it, he ends up spreading it like Nutella all over Gomez’s lower face.
After a successful application of lip oil, Blanco applies liquid highlighter to the exact same spot he initially applied contour, as well as the middle of her chin and the tip of her nose. “Oh, that’s good blending,” he says as he spreads it with a brush, though Gomez’s eyes say otherwise.
