Starting your morning with a healthy breakfast doesn’t just set the tone for your day, it can also work wonders for your skin. By incorporating protein-rich foods and seasonal fruits and vegetables into your morning routine, you’ll nourish your body from the inside out while supporting a radiant complexion. As we head into spring, check out my suggestions for delicious ideas tailored to energise your body and enhance your natural glow.

EAT BEAUTIFUL

If you haven’t already, check out my book Eat Beautiful, which is packed with seasonal recipes and ingredient ideas that are specially curated to help support healthy, glowing skin.

Do We Need Breakfast?

As intermittent fasting continues to grow in popularity, more and more people are choosing to skip breakfast and stretching their fast until lunchtime. This works well for many, but if you have an early start and an active lifestyle, you might be doing more harm than good by skipping breakfast.

Breakfast has long been touted as the most important meal of the day, and for good reason. Studies suggest that eating breakfast helps kick-start metabolism, improves focus, and supports overall health. Furthermore, skipping breakfast can disrupt your body’s natural rhythm, leading to low energy levels and poor concentration throughout the day, which may lead to overeating or more snacking later in the afternoon and evening. Of course, what we eat for breakfast is also key in making the healthiest choice to start the day. Whether you choose to eat breakfast should be led by what works for you and your lifestyle, and having some days where you have a slow or late start so choose to skip breakfast and other days where you know you need to be fully fuelled for the day is absolutely fine!

How Much Protein Should We Eat For Breakfast?

If you are eating breakfast, protein is a vital component of a balanced meal, especially for maintaining healthy skin and consistent energy levels. It supports muscle repair, boosts metabolism, and keeps you feeling full longer. Experts recommend consuming 20–30 grams of protein at breakfast, which can be achieved through foods like eggs, Greek yogurt, nuts, or protein-rich smoothies.

Find my blueberry smoothie recipe here, which you can update with a scoop of protein powder to give you an extra boost.

Eat The Seasons: Spring Fruit & Vegetables

Spring is the perfect time to embrace fresh, seasonal produce that benefits both your health and skin. Seasonal eating ensures you get the freshest ingredients packed with nutrients that your body needs at this time of year.

There are lots of spring fruits and vegetables to consider incorporate into your breakfasts. I love strawberries, which are packed with vitamin C to boost collagen production, kiwis, a great source of vitamin E for skin elasticity, asparagus, which is rich in antioxidants that combat free radicals, carrots, high in beta-carotene to promote glowing skin, and spinach, loaded with vitamins A and C to reduce inflammation. Eggs are a year-round great breakfast food as they’re packed with vitamins and a great source of protein, too.

Eating seasonally not only enhances flavour and dietary variety but also ensures you’re getting the maximum nutritional benefits from your food.

Healthy Breakfast Recipe Ideas

Kiwis

Coming into season in late spring and through summer, kiwis are a great breakfast food. Check out my healthy kiwi pancakes recipe here.

Eggs

How about starting the day with a filling and healthy frittata, that will keep you full until lunch (and you could even eat leftovers for lunch, too)? Check out my recipe here.

Carrots

Try combining several of the healthiest spring veg and make a carrot and spinach breakfast smoothie by combining both with apple, ginger, oats and flaxseed.

Check out Eat Beautiful for an entire book of skin-friendly seasonal recipes.
