5 Common Questions:
1. Should All Clients Tip Their Hair Stylists?
The exception is if your technician owns the salon, then no tip is expected because they get a cut of everybody’s clients.
2. Is It Ever Okay Not To Tip?
Tipping is a personal decision, but to tip nothing at all when a service has been performed, even with dissatisfaction, is not the best solution. Everyone deserves a chance to rise to the occasion. It’s better to let management know of your dissatisfaction. If it’s happening with you, it may be happening to other clients.
3. How Much Should I Tip?
15 – 20% is the standard amount. The same gratuity rule when you’re dining out but with a hair technician, if you’re regular, I would say 20% for each visit and a tip over the holidays equal to one haircut.
4. Is It Better To Add The Tip To A Payment Via A Credit Or Debit Card, Or Give It In Cash?
Many salons only except tips in cash so you’ll have to do your homework and know before you go. There are also new apps where you pay your tip directly to the technician in a stand-alone tipping kiosk.
5. Should Assistants Be Tipped, Too?
If a service has been performed, then a gratuity is in order. If an “assistant” washes your hair, for example, that warrants a $5 -10 tip.
